Biografia:
Bernardita de Lourdes Pérez Cruz, mais conhecida como Lourdes Pérez, nasceu em 12 de fevereiro de 1961 no bairro de Hato Arriba do povoado San Sebastián, em Porto Rico. Compositora, cantora, arranjadora, violonista e poeta, entre outros atributos, Lourdes atuou em performances ao lado de artistas consagradas(os) como a argentina Mercedes Sosa e a canadense Jane Siberry. É citada em importantes publicações internacionais, tais como Music Hound World: The Essential Album Guide (2000), Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States (Oxford University Press, 2005) e World Music: the Basics by Richard Nidel (2005).
Sua formação musical inclui o aprendizado do violão com o irmão Raul E. Pérez, também compositor, regência e canto coral, com Widilia Ellis. Graduou-se Bacharel em Psicologia na Universidad de Puerto Rico, fazendo Mestrado em Educação na University of Texas, em Brownsville (EUA).
Filha da historiadora, professora e artesã Carmen I. Cruz Vargas e de Raul Pérez González, Lourdes é entusiasta do gênero nova trova, trabalhando com a décima como material literário e musical. Inclui em suas criações artísticas aspectos da cultura jíbara porto-riquenha, que combina com a música e a poesia contemporâneas. Divulga autoras(es) porto-riquenhas(os), ao lado de composições próprias e das irmãs cantautoras Teresita e Mirian Pérez. Este perfil provavelmente a levou a ser convidada por Mercedes Sosa para interpretar a canção Oubao Moin no Symphony Hall de Boston, ao que se seguiram diversas apresentações em duo com a cantora argentina.
Recebeu, em 2006, o prêmio de $50.000 dado pela United States Artists pelo destaque como uma das melhores artistas vivas. No mesmo ano, sua canção Paloma Urbana foi considerada a melhor canção latina pelo Just Plain Folks Music Award. Em 2011 e 2013 realizou turnês pela Europa, com grande sucesso. É detentora de uma discografia com 11 CDs, além de compor trilhas para filmes, dança e teatro. Suas composições foram gravadas, entre outras(os), por artistas como a libanesa May Nasr.
Lourdes Pérez faz questão de não ocultar sua opção pelo lesbianismo, além de colocar sua voz na defesa pelos Direitos Humanos em geral. Apresenta-se em comunidades indígenas e, em 1996, foi convidada pelo movimento Zapatista para integrar uma delegação internacional em Chiapas. É co-fundadora da OCTAAV (Organization of Concerned Texas Artists and Activists for Vieques), empenhada em remover a marinha de guerra dos EUA da ilha de Vieques. Seu concerto em um campo de refugiados da Palestina incluiu tradução própria da canção Ounadeekum (Te Llamo) ao espanhol, posteriormente incluída no CD Este Filo.
Homenageou líderes de Direitos Humanos, Educadoras(es) e Escritoras(es) como Glória Anzaldua, Isabel Rosado, Liliana Wilson e Efraín Bámaca Velasquez, líder da resistência Maya. Em 2014 lançou o livro e CD Dulce Vigilante: Remembranzas de La Region Oeste de Puerto Rico juntamente com a mãe e a sobrinha e artista plástica Andrea Maria Carnaval. Estas mulheres representam três gerações, tempos e manifestações artísticas, em torno da temática da região Oeste de Porto Rico nas décadas de 1930, 40 e 50.
Lançou Radio Vox Fem (VoxFem.org) em 2018, em comemoração ao Dia Internacional da Mulher. No mesmo ano iniciou os trabalhos no livro-CD Still Here: Homenaje al Westside San Antonio, transformando histórias orais da comunidade mexicana/chicana do Westside San Antonio, Texas, em canções. Participam deste projeto 20 músicos da região.
Lourdes desenvolveu sua carreira musical e artística em Porto Rico, nos EUA (Texas, Califórnia, Alaska e Arizona), no México e na Espanha. Compartilha estas experiências com a esposa e colaboradora Annette D’Armata.

Biography:
Bernardita de Lourdes Pérez Cruz, better known as Lourdes Pérez, was born on February 12, 1961 in the Hato Arriba neighborhood of San Sebastián, Puerto Rico. Composer, singer, arranger, guitarist and poet, among other attributes, Lourdes performed alongside consecrated artists such as Argentine Mercedes Sosa and Canadian Jane Siberry. Her name is cited in important international publications such as Music Hound World: The Essential Album Guide (2000), Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latins in the United States (Oxford University Press, 2005) and World Music: the Basics by Richard Nidel (2005) .
Her musical training includes the learning of the guitar with her brother Raul E. Pérez, also composer, regency and choral singing, with Widilia Ellis. She conquered a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Texas at Brownsville (USA).
Daughter of historian, teacher and artisan Carmen I. Cruz Vargas and Raul Pérez González, Lourdes is an enthusiast of the new trova genre, working with the tenth as literary and musical material. Aspects of the Puerto Rican jíbara culture are also included in her artistic creations, which the composer combines with contemporary music and poetry. She gives voice to Puerto Rican authors’ compositions, along with her own ones and those of her singing sisters Teresita and Mirian Pérez. This profile probably led her to be invited by Mercedes Sosa to play the song Oubao Moin at Symphony Hall in Boston, followed by several presentations in duo with the Argentine singer.
In 2006, she received the $ 50,000 prize given by United States Artists for being one of the best live artists. In the same year, her song Paloma Urbana was considered the best Latin song by the Just Plain Folks Music Award. In 2011 and 2013 she toured Europe, with great success. She owns a discography with 11 CDs, in addition to composing tracks for films, dance and theater. Her compositions were recorded, among others, by artists such as the Lebanese May Nasr.
Lourdes Pérez insists on not hiding her option for lesbianism, in addition to putting her voice in defense for Human Rights in general. She has sung in indigenous communities, and, in 1996, was invited by the Zapatista movement to join an international delegation in Chiapas. She is a co-founder of the OCTAAV (Organization of Concerned Texas Artists and Activists for Vieques), which is committed to removing the US Navy from the island of Vieques. Her concert at a refugee camp in Palestine included her own translation of the song Ounadeekum (Te Llamo) into Spanish, later included on the CD Este Filo.
She honored leaders of Human Rights, Educators and Writers such as Gloria Anzaldua, Isabel Rosado, Liliana Wilson and Efraín Bámaca Velasquez, leader of the Maya resistance. In 2014 she released the book and CD Dulce Vigilante: Remembranzas de La Region Oeste of Puerto Rico together with her mother and her niece and plastic artist Andrea Maria Carnaval. These women represent three generations, times and artistic manifestations, around the western region of Puerto Rico in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
Lourdes launched Radio Vox Fem (VoxFem.org) in 2018 to celebrate International Women's Day. In the same year she began working on the book Still Here: Homenaje al Westside San Antonio, transforming oral histories of the Mexican / Chicano community of the Westside San Antonio, Texas, into songs. Twenty musicians from the region participated in this project.
Lourdes has developed her musical and artistic career in Puerto Rico, USA (Texas, California, Alaska and Arizona), Mexico and Spain. She shares these experiences with her wife and collaborator Annette D'Armata.
