Biografia:

Fuhong Shi nasceu em Shenyang, China, em 1976. Em sua infância, esteve sempre rodeada de música: seu pai, um tenor, costumava dar aulas em casa todos os dias.

Aos 6 anos de idade, seus pais decidiram levá-la para estudar violino e, logo após, Shi também começou a ter aulas de piano. De acordo com a artista, foi a exposição à teoria musical que mudou sua vida completamente: aos 13 anos, ela já sabia que queria ser uma compositora.

A artista estudou composição no Conservatório Central de Música de Pequim, onde recebeu seu diploma em 2000. 

Em 2005, ela terminou um Mestrado em Composição na Universidade de Victoria e, em 2009, recebeu o título de Doutora em Composição na Universidade de Toronto, ambas no Canadá.

Desde então, ela tem integrado o corpo docente do Conservatório Central de Música de Pequim.

Em sua carreira, Fuhong Shi recebeu diversos prêmio, tanto na China como internacionalmente. Alguns dos destaques são: Karen Kieser Prize in Canadian Music (2007), Generation 2008 Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal+ Composer’s Competition, bolsa de estudos do Acanthes International Composition Workshop (2008, França), medalha de bronza no China National Instrument Orchestra Composition Competition (2014), e o Young Composers Project do China National Arts Fund (2015).

Atualmente, a artista é professora visitante na Universidade de Columbia, em Nova York, com financiamento do China Scholarship Council.

Composições:

Fuhong Shi tem colaborado com diversas orquestras e suas composições têm sido apresentadas ao redor do mundo.

Em 2005, seu trabalho Dialogue II foi apresentado pela Orquestra Sinfônica de Vancouver, e seu quarteto de cordas Refractions foi selecionado pela primeira edição do Master Class de Quatuor Bozzini.

Em 2010, seus trabalhos Mandala, Concentric Circles e a ópera Spring, River and Flowers on a Moonlit Night foram apresentados em Pequim e Toronto.

Até o momento, Shi não se comprometeu com um estilo de música particular: algumas de suas peças são enérgicas, enquanto outras são mais atmosféricas. Quando compõe, a artista tenta fundir a estética da música e arte chinesa com as técnicas de composições da música ocidental.

Como inspiração, ela usa os textos milenares do I Ching, músicas tibetanas, entre outras referências. Para Spring, River and Flowers in a Moonlit Night, a artista explica que utilizou gestos musicais inspirados na caligrafia chinesa.

As composições de Fuhong Shi têm se destacado amplamente pelo mundo e divulgado a música clássica chinesa para o ocidente. A artista acredita que atualmente existem muitos outros compositores de qualidade na China.

Para ela, o país está no momento evolutivo que os Estados Unidos estiveram um século atrás: “Agora nós temos energia, bons estudantes, boas salas de concerto. Precisamos de bons compositores e curadores e fundações ativas para ajudar os compositores emergentes a se desenvolver”.

Composer of the month: Fuhong Shi (1976)

Biography:

Fuhong Shi was born in Shenyang, China, in 1976. As a child, she was surrounded by music: her father, a tenor, used to teach at home everyday.

When she was 6 years old, her parents started her on violin lessons and, shortly after that, she started learning how to play the piano. According to the artist, it was her first exposure to music theory that changed her life. When she was 13 years old, she already knew she wanted to be a composer.

The artist studied composition at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and received a bachelor’s degree in 2000.

In 2005, she concluded her Master’s in composition at the University of Victoria and in 2009 she received a Doctoral degree in composition at the University of Toronto, both in Canada.

Since then, she has been appointed to the faculty of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

During her career, the artist has received a number of awards, both in China and worldwide. Some of the highlights are: the 2007 Karen Kieser Prize in Canadian Music, the Generation 2008 Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal+ Composer’s Competition, the 2008 scholarship from Acanthes International Composition Workshop (France), the Bronze Medal in the China National Instrument Orchestra Composition Competition (2014), and the Young Composers Project in the China National Arts Fund (2015).

Currently, Fuhong Shi is the Visiting Scholar supported by the China Scholarship Council at Columbia University, New York (U.S.).

Compositions:

Fuhong Shi has collaborated with numerous orchestras and ensembles, and her compositions have been performed worldwide.

In 2005, her work Dialogue II was presented by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and her string quartet Refractions was selected by the first edition Master class held by Quatuor Bozzini.

In 2010, her works Mandala, Concentric Circles and the Chamber opera Spring, River and Flowers on a Moonlit Night were premiered in Beijing and Toronto.

So far, Shi has not committed to a particular music style: while some of her pieces are energetic, some of them are much more atmospheric.

When composing, the artist tries to fuse the aesthetics of Chinese music and art with the compositional techniques of the Western music.

As an inspiration, Shi uses the millenary I Ching texts, music of Tibet, and other references. For Spring, River and Flowers in a Moonlit Night, the artist explains she used musical gestures inspired by the Chinese calligraphy.

Fuhong Shi compositions have been widely spread internationally and have brought Chinese music to Western society. The artist believes that there are many other great composers in China nowadays.

For her, China is at a point in its evolution where the U.S. was a century ago:  “Right now we have energy, we have good students, we have good concert halls. Now we need good compositions and active curators and foundations to help emerging composers grow up”.
